Welcome
Mississippi Mills is a municipality about 30 minutes southwest of Ottawa, and consists of the towns of Almonte, Pakenham, Appleton and Clayton, together with the rural township of Ramsay.
Mississippi River
Throughout the years, the Mississippi River played a significant role in the community’s growth and change. The river’s calm stretches of water tumbling into plunging falls and swirling rapids provided excellent mill sites. This is why for more than 120 years Almonte was recognized as Canada’s largest production center of woolen goods. Today, the heritage structures that remain have been renovated for use as retail sites, offices, museums and residences and will continue to be as much a part of the future as they are a sign of Mississippi Mills’ past.
Nature, Museums
The Mill of Kintail Conservation Area is a must-see for nature lovers and heritage enthusiasts, artist and photographers. The adjacent museum is a showcase of sculptures and memorabilia of R. Tait McKenzie, a world-renowned sculptor and physical education pioneer. Also on this site is the James Naismith Museum. It is a fascinating tribute to Almonte’s most famous citizen, who gave us the game of basketball.

Visit Mississippi Mills for the many and varied festivals and cultural events such as Naismith 3 on 3 Basketball festival, the North Lanark Highland Games, the Almonte and Pakenham Fairs, Fibrefest, Celtfest and the Mississippi Mills Bicycle Month in June.
